Synapse Storybook

Over the course of the past semester, our peer support committee collaborated on a project dedicated to honoring and amplifying the voices of individuals and caregivers living with traumatic brain injury. Many of the individuals we spoke with described feeling invisible or misunderstood, trapped between a desire to be seen and a world unprepared to understand them. Through their words, we saw an opportunity to bring these stories to light as a catalyst for change.

The goal of this project is threefold:

  • To amplify survivor voices, ensuring they are heard, valued, and believed.

  • To highlight the daily, often overlooked, challenges that accompany brain injury.

  • To serve as a compassionate, accessible educational resource for healthcare professionals, caregivers, and the general public.

Our storybook features:

  • Thirteen powerful survivor narratives, compiled through interviews and presented in a journalistic storytelling format.

  • Artwork by a TBI survivor, created during art therapy sessions to visually reflect her experience with brain injury.

  • Thematic pages, which highlight recurring experiences shared in our support groups, providing insight into the lived reality of TBI survivors.

  • A list of resources for survivors and caregivers, offering guidance on navigating recovery, healthcare systems, and support networks.
