ABOUT COLUMBIA SYNAPSE

Columbia Synapse is a student-run organization committed to support, education, and advocacy for the brain injury community. We host weekly virtual support groups where individuals with brain injury and volunteers come together to share experiences, offer support, and discuss key challenges such as medical advocacy, identity shifts, and navigating life post-injury. We also organize awareness initiatives and educational programs to break the stigma and promote greater recognition of TBI-related challenges. Our goal is to create a lasting impact by fostering connection, promoting understanding, and driving conversations that lead to change.
When you have a TBI or brain injury, you don’t have those concepts anymore- you don’t have executive functioning - it’s like looking at the other side of the river (the normal society) but there’s no bridge to get there
OUR PILLARS
Peer Support
Through our weekly peer support group and buddy program, we aim to connect individuals with brain injuries with each other and volunteers, fostering a sense of belonging and a safe space where participants can navigate the emotional, cognitive, and social challenges of recovery with dignity, solidarity, and hope.
Neuroscience-Informed Education
We educate healthcare providers, students, and the public about the lived experiences and unmet needs of individuals with brain injury
Patient-Centered Advocacy
We advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals living with ABI, striving to create a more inclusive and supportive society through outreach and awareness campaigns.
Student Engagement
We empower students to become compassionate future clinicians, researchers, and advocates by providing opportunities to directly engage with survivors and their narratives.
Storytelling and Peer Interaction
We facilitate storytelling and peer interaction to create a platform for brain injury individuals to share their experiences, find support, and build a network of understanding and empathy.
